  • Funny question about Petro Red Bulu's

    Hi

    I have a question for the importers and other petros knowledgeable people;

These Red's were imported to the States about 5 or some odd years ago.. Accordingly to a recent post that Steve mentioned..

How come people did not breed them like they are being bred now?? Were they harder to breed back then??

With the ease of all these being bred... and now that the prices are coming down hugely.. I would have thought that they would have been bred like crazy when they came in years ago..

I know that I do not see the whole picture... Or know the facts, but do remember something that was said some time ago...

The more difficult it is to breed a good petro, the higher the price will remain.

The quality of the Longolia is high.. the price remains high.. The fish are not normally sold the way these Reds are being sold.. To me, it almost seems like the longolia's should have been 700 dollars to begin with..

I have not seen anyone talk about this kinda... but hey.. I am ---->
    Just thinking aloud

I dont know who had them 5yrs ago....but to me a petro is a petro(unless it is a Blue Giant). Maybe it is different methods being used today??? Recent information shows that packing them in tight has proven to work really well. Also, a 1male tank has also proven to work. Alot of info on petros is nothing more than hype IMO. My Macro Rainbows had not been bred to my knowledge before I recieved them, but are now breeding like every month. I do nothing special for them other than 2x 50% water changes a week. They eat a mixture of high quality pellets and are given 2 teaspoons every day. I have a 3/10 ratio in an 8'ft tank.

The reason the price is droping so fast is because one single person is flooding the market with frys for $65 each, when they were $180 each not long ago. He droped the price almost single handedly. Seems to me.
          10 Gallon (emergency tank)
          20 Gallon (emrgency tank)
58 gallon ( Tetra, Platie, Cory)
          125 Gallon (Ikola)

                  Honestly it's not only him.

The importers are also charging less.

Last year it was 700/per and now it's 250-350/per.

I've always priced f1 at 1/4 price of WC.

I asked this question also over in Trophs.com

There were several people who responded including the last poster; Sarah or Longstocking. She indicated that the actual timing was 7 years ago. Also that the fish were twice as large that came in and hence more aggressive.

The biggest thing that occurred was the ratio. Very few females to males. She made mention that one person who had a group of them was a victim of a person shooting windows and hence a tank of red's got hit and when that individual came home... no more fish.

I was surprised to hear that these Red's will get a lot bigger than what has been coming in. Twice the size, should mean that the fish will be getting up to the 16 to 22 some inch. What sizes are Alex's Reds??

The other thing for the fish being sold at 65 dollars.. If you read that individual's ad, you come very quickly away with the understanding that he is promoting the hobby.... Much like what you guys down in Texas do . You guys rock!!! The promotion of Tropheus and Petrochromis is second to none anywhere else.

You Texans demonstrate a willingness to further this hobby far beyond many... if not all of the people that I am aware of......

                      Another funny question.

One individual made a comment; Do these Red bulu's look exactly like the ones that came in 7 years ago??

                        Bill,

You are correct about the female vs. male ratio. Now, i do have some issues are concerns about the shooting out the window. It was Alex's first shop where the window was supposed to be shot out.

Now the red's that first came in was pretty big, but of course so was trophs. High gas prices have kept the red's coming in sub adults.

Alex's second batch never really did anything because of aggression, kept in a dark room, and that damn huge giraffe cat lol.

Actually the window got shot out at his 2920 store, and that is when the fish died.

The biggest difference I have seen in the Reds from then to the Red Now, is I never had seen Females before. So I really dont know what to say about that, other than to compare them to the German F1's that Alex brought in after his Huge Male died from the windo incident. BUT I can say that the mouths of the Old Wilds compared to the ones coming in now, have a different mouth structure/texture wise. The lips seem much more smooth, compared to the ones I had seen before.

You can really see the difference, when you compare Alex's smaller "Old Wild" to the F1's he imported and see the difference in the mouths.

As for why they did not breed back then, the knowledge level on keeping Petro's was really weak compared to Tropheus. Now in the last like 2-3 years, there have been so many people bringing in Petros, that everyone has grown in experience levels from basically MASTERING Tropheus, and already enough people have tried and failed, and tried again, and shared those experiences with their Petrochromis. That's why they can breed them now in my opinion. The keepers are just so much more experinced, and besides it really helps that there are a lot more importers, and better exporters than there were 7-8 years ago. The experince level.

If what Sarah says about the ratio is true, then also this is a MAJOR factor as well. I have known Sarah going on 6-7 years and I trust what she says. She's been in this hobby a long time.

Honestly, I don't have much trust in what Alex say. Unless you seen the died petrol from the shot window then I will stick to it being sold. Remember he just confess to the petros being f1's in front of you and I.
