  • Lost 1/2 my Kiku colony tonight

I decided it was time to do the BIG water change, clean the sand, grab the young from the overflow box etc..

I put all the adults in a large cooler like I have done before, figuring they where going to end up in there for only an hour or two. This was a airtight cooler. I closed the lid on them. Well more than 2 hours would go by before I looked in on them and to my SHOCK and horror ALL the fish where on the bottom. I moved them quickly into fresh water and add bubblers.. Now that I am writing my not so happy halloween message, I am grabbing my stupid bat and hitting myself over the head with it.. I starting over again.. 9m/6f (prays) / 1fry that is to small to even sex...

Yeah I know I fuggared things up... its my fault for not keeping track of time and adding bubblers.... I feel dumb now.

you shouldnt have even removed them from the tank at all. i dont understand why you would do that. I do 90% water changes every week and clean my sand and they never leave the tank, ive never lost a fish.

I feel you though and im sorry for your loss.

I did it because I wanted 100% of the water gone. I wanted to remove all the substrate and get rid of an over population of MTS. The only way I could do this was to remove everything out and vacuum the bottom. I have done this at least 10 times in the past and never had a problem. Usually I dont take as long as I did this time because the only person who could help me was my roomate's son and we took a lot longer than I though getting though this. Usually I have more helpers to do this and I usually have a different cooler for holding the fish (bigger cooler) and this time I was like no problem I this smaller cooler and we will be done and back in the tank within the hour, so no biggie.. I usually do 90% water changes so I know how to do those.. it was just I wanted everything cleaned this time... got it done but my cheer stupidity got the best of me :(

Don't beat yourself up ...Jesper . Sometimes you can do something a hundred times and never have a problem....then all of sudden one day...tragedy strikes . We get so complacent with our routine maintenance ..that we fail to realize that the smallest change can be catastrophic . Trust me I speak from experience....... I lost a group of Fronts last year due to my complacency .

Sorry to hear that it, that is a tough loss for any fish keeper. I would like to thank you for posting this though. As tough is it may be to post about perhaps it will keep someone else who reads this from making the same mistake in the future. After all that is the ultimate purpose of this forum; to learn from others.
