I'm planning a move in the next year to an area where I'll have well water and where most people take it for granted that you'll either put in a household softening system or plan on changing your faucets and hot water heaters every couple of years. Maybe both. While part of me has looked forward to untreated well water for my tanks, it's also made me realize I know nothing about the effects of water softening systems, like the ones that use salt, on aquarium water. I've tried reading up on different systems a bit, but not a lot has soaked in.
Can anyone tell me if they use some sort of household system, and if so, what kind and if it's safe to go straight to their tanks? I imagine there's a way I could bypass the system to get water for my tanks if need be, but it sounds like that would be a lot more work and worry.
I'm going to need to make a decision on this as I build, pretty sure.
