I used to do that, put a carbon sock in my wet dry, but I don't anymore. With me, I see this hobby as a non stop learning experience so far. There are many ways to go about filtering a eco system, but in my humble opinion, it really boils down do the total mixture of  your ingredients combined within that eco system that will ultimately determine the best filtration for that particular environment.

So far, what I have learned or at least what I believe is the best way to care for your fish is this:

• Regular water changes, along with proper chemical treatments and or preparation.
  
  Regular filter maintenance schedules.
  
  Regular feeding of proper diet for the kind of fish you are keeping.
