  • Cory catfish injury

My poor little cory! I did the same routine I do every morning - wake up, turn the aquarium lights on, go about my day, then a few hours later come back to count the fish and check on them. I noticed I only found 2 of the 3 cories but didn't think much of it; the tank is covered in plants and it's sometimes hard to find them all but then I looked on the other side and saw the missing cory.

The poor thing must have been darting up for air and got itself wedged between the glass and the thermometer. The ONE day I forgot to take the thermometer out! I thought it was dead, it sure looked it, but I moved the thermometer and the fish darted away.

Its belly is quite red, possibly from being squished for however long - seriously, the space between the thermometer and the glass was tiny, I have no idea how much force it must have taken to even end up in there - and one of its front fins is crumpled. It's darting around wildly and breathing heavily and ignoring the other cories. Its color is good except for the red belly. There was no sign of illness or injury at any point before this so I'm almost positive any problems are stemming from hitting the thermometer and getting stuck there.

Any idea if there's anything I can do to help? I removed the thermometer (obviously) but I don't know if there's anything else I can do to help besides just leave the lil thing alone till it feels better. Luckily there's no aggression at all in the tank so I know no one will pick on it and there's lots of plants to hide under and around. I just feel awful because it's completely my fault that it happened. I ALWAYS take out the thermometer because: 1) it's ugly, and 2) this one is the real gem - because I was afraid a fish might hurt itself on the edge of the thermometer. Nice, huh?

    Any advice is appreciated.

It should be fine, I've seen same far worse injuries and they pull through. Just give it a few days.

The red might be some internal bleeding, but they are very resilient. I've seen several of my cory's get themselves in serious trouble and pull through. Of course watch the tank, even though there has been no aggression so far, when something is injured other critters may pick on it.

I just remember something. When I was moving some baby pleco's to a new tank one jumped and landed on the floor. I had to pick it up by hand and a couple days later I noticed it's tail had fallen off! It's now 6 months old, has a weird tail but is 3 inches long and fat and sassy. So fish do recover.

Drop of Melafix could do wonders.

The cory seems just fine today, I can't even pick out which one was injured. They're all schooling happily together and I put in a few new plants, so the shrimp are too preoccupied with that to even do their usual routine of stealing all the cories' foods. I also moved the molly that was in there to a more appropriate tank so the cories have really lit up, I think they weren't crazy about the molly.

But I'm cautiously hopeful that this'll all turn out all and I have decided I will definitely just keep the thermometer somewhere where it's impossible for the fish to get it. Maybe in the filter box.
