  • High temp

My 30 gallon right now seems to keep a temp of 80-81.5 constant all day long. when is was directly in front of the window temps were lower, now its moved away from the window and temps stay higher. What could be a cause and resolution to this.

    current setup is:
30 gallon with a few smaller cichlids.
eheim 2217 with spray bar completely submerged.
Lighting is 1 ~21" PC light.
Powerhead pointed towards surface to break the surface a bit
100-150 watt Ebo jager heater set at 77

    any ideas?

I second katypond - that's the first thing that came to my mind. The other is the heater. Sometimes they're just not accurate. After you check the A/C, try turning down the heater a degree or two.

I never thought about the AC unit. I'll have to check it this evening when I get home.

I've heard bad things about the Ebo heaters, and you might want to think about getting two smaller heaters in case one fails and doesn't turn off. That should give you time to catch it before it boils your tank.

              Re: High temp

I have lost a tank full due to a cracked glass tube on the heater.
(it let the water in on the electronics)

Also check your thermometer, sometimes the mercury/glass sensor slides up or down on the graduated holder.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Ill check the heater, I dont think it failed as the temp seems to fluctuate so much. As for the thermometer, it is a digital so hopefully its not off that much, even though the stick on thermometer is reading a bit different.

                  Re: High temp

Yeah, pretty sure yours didn't fail. But I've noticed (I only have 1 heated tank currently, BTW) that the heater I am using is set to 68 or 69 degrees and it maintains a tank temp of about 78 degrees...Weird, but that's how it is. So that's why I suggested turning down the heater a degree or two to see if that makes a difference. After you check the vent locations, that is.  :)

100-150w is kind of overkill on a 30?

                      Re: High temp

the orginal position was across the room from an AC vent, that blew straight across the room. Now the tank is placed along the same wall just to the side rather than in the middle of it.

I turned down the heater a bit and will see if that helps out.

Sounds like it was the AC after all. Let us know if turning down the heater does anything.

                          Re: High temp

turned down the heater last night and woke up this morning to better temps, ~78.5. Hopefully it will stabilize around there through out the day.

80-81.5 isn't really that bad IMO

                              Re: High temp

my 30 gallon tanks has been staying around 78 without the heater plugged in. Also Its not in direct sunlight but near the wall which absorbs alot of heat from the sun. Hopefully this helps.
