  • Something you don't see everday

I was watching my red chimba's here at work just now, and I saw the strangest thing. Recently, I had a new batch of fry appear. They have been fairly reclusive for the most part, but lately they have been getting a little bolder and darting around chasing food and each other. Just now, I witnessed four of them chasing one of the larger fry that was born back in September. I thought this very strange due to the fact that the older fry seem to have been playing the role of baby sitter to them.

But it was really amusing to see these four tiny little new fry, chase their baby sitter around their holey rock. You had to have been here and seen it to appreciate the way they worked together to actually pester their older brother or sister....it was very interesting.

Hey I can appreciate that. The chimba's are right next to my bed. Lately, I've been catching a few of the little fry (1") trying to color up and shake around the bigger females, seriously! it's funny to watch.

Maybe we can swap some chimba's someday to mix the blood a little?.....who knows,  they maybe related anyway?  :)

I have a batch of fry running around right now! It's awesome!

They are freshly spit after the female held (she's still holding some) for about a month now. Some of the fry tend to think that the chilling Bristlenose is a nanny or something cause they chill with him most of the day grazing.

I think that's the best part of keeping fish, (for me) is the excitement and joy I receive from seeing babies or fry in the tank...it's awesome.

Those bathybates are some big *** fish.  They get some 30cm (12inches)  I think they might be mean too...

I think they eat those fish.

I actually got a trio through alex once. From what I remember..

                              Deep water fish
                              Diet of feeder fish only
                              Jumpers
                              Require long acclimation
                              Don't ship well
Enjoys strong current in the tank
                              Gets ich easily
                              Cost $90+ per fish

I ended up losing the trio slowly one by one over the course of 2 months. I just couldn't ever get them to eat anything other than feeders. Alex had 8 in a 125 when I worked there and they did great for about 4 months. Then one day he decided to move them to another tank and they started dropping like flies. I'd like to try them again one day when I have more money to throw around, but who knows, maybe they do better in large groups. How trippy would it be to be at the bottom of Lake Tanganyika and you see a huge school of bathybates swim by, almost like barracuda's  8O
