  • Anyone order from Big Al's lately?

They seem to have the best price for the Rena XP3, but wanted to check to see if anyone else has used them lately and what your experience was if you have.

XP3 sucks IMO. Flow is too slow.

I've always used Eheims, but I am done with filters that aren't self priming and I don't want to spend money on the Pro models. It's a big PITA. Ordered the Rena, just wanted to make sure Al's was okay.

          Thanks for the heads up!

            Quick disconnects solve that problem.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one :) I always had quick disconnects on my 2217s and still had problems half the time getting it started up. On the flip side you can't beat Eheim quality. They do a great job and will last forever. It's just too much of a pain for me.

For something you only have to clean twice a year, wouldn't be worth to lose the eheim quality

xp3 arent that bad. But eheims are the best by far, but only the classic series. The pro models suck donkey dong big time, spend the extra bucks and buy something local. I saw someone selling a 2217 for 80 on the market.

Now we're going to have to disagree on how often they should be cleaned. For a high bioload tank I believe they should be cleaned every 2 to 3 months and yes, it's more than worth it. I agree that eheims are great filters, but they aren't all that and a bag of chips. I sold my last 2217 not that long ago. It still worked like a champ, but it was also still a big pain.

I have the inline ball valves. I hook the filter back up, open the ball valves walk away for a few minutes to let the canister fill up then i plug it in. Works great everytime.

Yeah I guess 2x a year is bad if you have a single canister as an only filter and nothing else. We all know the filter rule of if you have room under your tank for another filter, get one. I'm running 4 eheims, and I clean 2 every 3 months, and alternate which two get cleaned, so yeah, every 6 months roughly. Tank water is pristine, guess everyone is different.

I agree about Big Al's, great shop. They haven't always been the fastest shipping for me, but great customer service and top quality of goods/selection/pricing beats out most of the competition. Me and Roy are loyal customers of theirs, for sure.
