  • Water changes from tap to tank?

So im setting up my biggest tank yet(75g), and Im curious how you do large scale water changes? 5+ Gallons at a time....

Do you guys have a seperate container to treat the water before transfering, or dump straight from tap into tank and add conditioners to a live tank...assuming the water is the same temp?

Using a python, I drain 80%. Dose Prime directly to tank, set temp, and reverse the flow. Some use an inline carbon bottle to reduce any possible pollutants.

Doing water changes 5g at a time would be a lot of work. 35 buckets later. and the time it would take. that is just not the way to do it.
I have auto drains on everything over 75g. Turn the valve and drain down 50%. They recycle the water to the yard. keeps the grass green. As for the fill. I use a water hose right off the tape. Amquil+ and then water. Right to the tank.

The Python is a great tool for both draining and refilling. However, I only use RO water for the refill so the easy part is draining water. I used to pour in five gallons at a time but it disrupts my plants too much so now I add one gallon of RO water at a time from 5-gallon containers. I make 20-gallon water changes every four to five days in 135-gallon aquarium. I dose heavily with fertilizers. An 80% water change with RO water could be deadly (but most people use Houston tap water). If you have African cichlids, Houston tap is ideal.

It's okay to add water straight from tap. However, just be sure that you think twice before doing a large water change after or during a big rain.
