    Re: Water Change-outs..

So, adding water conditioner while your adding tap water does not harm the fish??  Seems like it takes some time to contact all of the chlorine and chloramine molecules and in that time the fish could feel some ill effects... For those of you that use carbon prefilters, do you add additional water conditioning to the tank, as well?

I imagine it would cause problems for the fish if the amount of chlorine and chloramine was high enough, but I've tested our tap water and didn't even register chlorine on the test strip.

This is why I pre-mix in the 32 gallon trash can. I have no scientific data, I just don't think 30 to 60ml (depending on brand) of conditioner can evenly spread through 30 to 60 gallons of water instantly and evenly.

BUT, with that said, I love the idea of just hooking a hose to the faucet and letting gravity do all the work.

Its amazing how many different ways there are to drain & fill a tank. Thanks for all the responses!

Carbon filters will remove the contaminants before they hit the water.  There is no reason to de-chlorinate when using that.

It does take a short while for the dechlorinator to mix fully with the new water. But remember, chlorine is an oxydizer that will use itself on the first organic molecule it contacts. Unless your tank is so completely pristene that you have no organics in the water column, the little bit of contact time between the chlorine and the water is probably inconsequential. I've read that in some cases, where water quality in the tank is not the cleanest, dechlorinating at all is unnecessary because the introduced chlorine will exhaust itself on the abundant organics before it gets a chance to affect the fish.

That is correct but only if the appropriate amount of carbon is used.  otherwise the water will not contact the carbon enough and you will still have chlorine or chlorimines.

                Cool!  Good to know!!

Guess I'll be draining my water with my pump (Eheim 2260 outlet) to water my plants in my yard and refill from my kitchen sink straight into the tank while adding dechlorinator.

                  Re: Water Change-outs..

I hope to build a nice size carbon canister someday, I just need to come up with a good design... already have about 50 lb of carbon ready for it!!  Now, I'm thinking of using a large drum like Ek had suggested and maybe keeping it in my garage and Teeing off the water that goes to my hot water heater.  Then running tubing to my tank through the attic and down the wall... I hope the pressure drop across all of this isn't too big, but the slower the flow the better, right??  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... EK!

you could put the dechlorinator into the tank and let it circulate for a few minutes, then start adding the water

                      Re: Water Change-outs..

What I would do is a large piece of pipe made about 4-5 ft in length and about 6-8" in diameter, and then I would get all the reduction items to reduce the pipe down to a 3/4" pipe.
Make two of them.  Fill one up with pool filter sand which then empties into the second bottle which is full of carbon to clean the now clean water of sediment particles.  (This will make the carbon last longer)
Make the water drop into 2x 55g+ drums which are connected.  This will allow you to fill up 100g and allow you to quickly pump that 100g to the 300 tank without having to go slow.. because you can fill the drums up over night slowly.

                        Re: Water Change-outs..

Every Saturday morning the sprinkler programmer  opens a valve that drains all my tanks for about 10mins. Gets them down about 50% then it waits five minutes and opens another valve that starts filling my tanks for about 20 mintues. Some tanks fill faster than others so when some tanks fill up it just drains out the drain I have for overflow into the backyard. All the tanks fill up in about 15-20 mintues. I don't use prime or dechlorinator because i'm on well water and it comes out just right.    That changes about 40 75g's every week, and when I want to do a water change during the week I just walk by the sprinkler programmer and push the Program Manual run button   and i'm done with my water changes.

                        Pythons....Dechlorinators......  AHAHHAHAHAHA

So, wait... you water your lawn with 1500 gallons of water (40 x 75 x 0.50) once per week???  That seems like A LOT of water!  The weeds in my lawn would THRIVE off of that fish poo.

                              Thanks!

Nah i got a big yard and its already muddy half the times, my parent planted all these fruit bearing trees everywhere so they like the extra water. 8O

A trick I used alot with the pythons is to connect it to the water hose outside. you dont have to use the little white adapter when you use the garden hose. Turn on the water to drain the tank for about 10 seconds then turn it off. That will create the siphon and you can go about cleaning the gravel and draining. That process takes longer to drain the tank but is not wasteful on water. Then you can close the cap of the python to refill the tank. All the watery mess outside and no overflowing sinks.

Pythons also comes with a strainer adapter so you dont suck up fish or small rocks.
