    Another new face

    Hello, like all other posts here I have just joined the forum.  I also just moved to the Houston area.

    In the past I have had a few 10 - 55 gal aquariums set ups, never more than 1 at a time.  Ive had cichlids for years since high school, but now I have a 2 yr old and a 30gal tank for his amusement only, so its back to a more friendly community of fishes for the next handful of years I think.

    So, being new to the area I want to know where the aquarists go to buy fish.  You cant tell in the yellow pages where the go-to places are, so I'd like to ask the experts.

    We live in the northeast part of town, off Beltway 8, so if there is a good place up this way Id particularly like to know about that.

        Welcome to the forum Frozentoze !!

        With a 30G tank you can still do cichlids..  I have always loved dwarf cichlids in small tanks because they will thrive well and they can live in community tanks easily and will do very well in a 30 gallon tank.

        I am not sure about the area that you live in since I am more west and southwest area of town.
        In Houston there are several good places go to get different kinds of fish and there are some great spots to get inexpensive fish.
        There are several aquarium clubs you can join, including HAS, GHAC, NASH, CAK, HLA.  Each can give you a different light on your fish and what you want to keep.

        With a 30g if I had no fish in it today and wanted something nice to look at, and something that will be fun and interesting to have your kid look at for hours on end.   A planted tank.   It sounds like a lot of work when you look at some of the people out there, but since you have no fish right now you can get a nice planted tank going, settle and then add fish slowly to the fray and be very happy with the tank.

        Tell us some more about the tank, what equipment you have etc, as it will assist us in telling you what you can and cannot do.
        If I was going to setup a tank as a planted tank, look at some of the posts that Luis Navarro (Navarro) and others have shown about how to make a planted tank, then I would most likely add a small colony (10-12) Cardinals, 10-12 Rummy Nose, and a pair of Apistogramma Agassizi (dwarf cichlids) making sure that their habitat is good..   I would also get about 6 Otocinclus as your algae cleaning crew...

            Howdy! Welcome to the box. I'm way south of you, so no clue about lfs in your area. If you're willin' to drive south, Aqua Zoo is a great place to do your fishy business.

              IMHO - you can't beat Anibantids, tetras & CAKs in a planted tank.
              But for children you may want to look at a bunch of barbs and plastic decorations.

                  Yes, plastic decorations, blue gravel and plastic fish. Just kidding, please don't give a bad example to your kid. You want to show him/her real, natural plants, stones and colorful fish just like it is in the natural environment. Don't kill the sensitivity for natural beauty in the child. In my personal opinion plastic decorations equals lack of good taste.

                        I thought Id just follow up on my questions from a while back with the answers from the past couple of years. Thanks to the HFBox for the recommendations of Aqua Zoo and the retailers page. I have gone to Aqua Zoo for most of my fish in the past few years and have recommended it to all my friends who live down there in Clear Lake area, so thanks for that recommendation. It's still a 45 min drive for me from Atascocita area. I still haven't found a great place in my area. This most recent reboot of the tank, I tried some of the stores on the west side of town. I would recommend Xtreme Fish & P and Fish Gallery to anyone- excellent stock. City pets was better than Petco but took a back seat to the other two. Xtreme stock was much larger than FGallery, and I needed smaller fish to grow together this time. Still found a few fish that fit.

                        As for my community aquarium for my young kids, I added this pic of my setup on this most recent reboot. Thanks iphone for upside down pic but close enough. It's not just our tank but our lifetime rock collection. We started with a characins tank the first time with a happy couple years of 9 Cardinals, 2 Angelfish, 2 Gouramis, a pair of Bolivian Rams, 6 zebra danios, 3 serpaes, 4 kuli loaches, a brushy nose Pleco and a Yoyo loach, give or take. A couple years ago we went with a change, and I got 14 Convict Cichlid fry when our Rams died. As they grew, we had a lot of fun with their social development, even a breeding pair. I couldn't cull them to maybe 6 or so because they were too good at hiding, so we kept them all. Added a couple clown loaches for tougher company once characins were all eliminated.

                        Last month my 2 year old fed the fish the entire can of flakes, and by the time I could recover the tank, we had just 4 convicts and an Opaline Gourami left. My older son is in love with Gouramis right now and wouldn't part with his remaining convicts, so our new reboot community tanks looks like: 2 Opaline Gouramis, two gold Gouramis, one Dwarf gourami, 4 1" convicts that are done growing, 3 Tropheus 3/4", two tiny YoYo loaches 3/4", a spot for kuli loaches once I find them, a Chinese algae eater, a clown pleco, and a red tail shark. Son wanted shark but I don't expect him to last too long. So far Gouramis seem set on fighting until there will b fewer than 5, otherwise seems like peaceful coexistence. Not sure what i can do to get Gouramis to cooperate better- it distresses my son to watch them pick on each other. I may add Tropheus over time as convicts die off, we'll see. Anyway this is our community aquarium for my kids.

                              Also may wanna check out the ADG store if you are are Pearland sometime well worth the trip. The retail space is open from Tues to Sat 8am to 5pm.
