Fried return pump

I was draining my tank this morning after setting up everything for a trial run. I had the return pump in the main tank area when I noticed it starting to smoke. I unplugged it right away. It left a horrible odor in the tank. My question is, is this going to be a problem or harm anything that I put in the tank? Obviously, I need a new return pump. I just don't want harm anything I put in there.

The tank is empty at the moment. I completely drained it. It's the odor that concerns me. Thanks Ek.
