I got hipped to the egg crates. The are low profile and cheap. Perfect for auto feeders and better for light penetration.

Here's an example of eggcrate as a lid. You can cut the eggcrate to size with pliers or sharp wire cutters. Very cheap and can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's. They are labeled as "Light Diffusers" in the store.

You can find the eggcrate in the lighting section of HD or Lowe's. Very cheap and effective alternative to glass lids. I will warn you that small fish can pass through those holes and you're gonna have similar attributes as if you were to have no lid of any sort on the tank (more evaporation and possible temperature swings). Light penetration will be greater though.

For smaller fish, scorpioswife made a thread where her husband fixed cross-stitching grid to the eggcrate with zip ties for use with smaller fish.

When I bought mine I got it for half price because it was chipped. They run for like 10 or 11 bucks. You'll need two.
