Wanted: cheap canister filter + plants

looking for a cheap canister filter, something that can handle 40 gallons
also looking for some free or dirt cheap plants - nothing big or expensive, i dont even know whether plants will survive in my set-up so you could call it an experiment of sorts. i dont want to go and spend 30 bucks on plants at petco for them to die over night. so maybe just a clipping or something that i can test the waters with
have softy frags for trade if youre into saltwater

sorry, should have put this in the op, unless i can properly offset some of the cost with frags, im hoping not to spend more than 30-40 bucks, i know im being really tight with that, but hopefully somebody can help me out!
