Re: My first attempt at discus keeping

Congrats on picking up such a beautiful specimen! That was one of the most vibrant colored L134 leopard frogs I have ever seen!

I was really tempted to get her (to me it looks like a nice plump she ready to mate or it could be a male with stored fat for breeding) but I have my zebras I should be concentrating on but if the price was right it would have been over!

So, in the end, the BN pleco isn’t bothering my discus.  That’s good.  But Mr. BN pleco also really isn’t taking care of the algae.  This is a shame, because everything I read said the BN pleco are serious algae eaters, unlike other plecos which are more decorative (like my golden nugget).  Perhaps only the plain BN are work horses?  This BN likes to stay on the drift wood and really doesn’t give any attention to the glass.  So, my main purpose of keeping algae under control isn’t being addressed.  Now I’m thinking I might try snails or risk putting some Otocinclus Catfish in there

snails leave trails in the algae, they arent very good at cleaning properly.
My common pleco is the best algae eater ive had. ive never had any ottos or bn's.

Give the BN some time and don't feed them food either, I have noticed that if you supplement them with food they will be lazy and not clean the algae. I had ABN and they were great workers.
