  • Wanted: WTB Shell Dwellers

    Hi Group,

I've been lurking on here since some time last year. After quiet a bit of thought I believe I want to try a 10gal. shell dweller tank. Right now I have one well established with a female betta that I will move to another 10gal in a different room. All I need to do is take out the gravel and put in some sand and shells. I saw where someone on a shell dweller forum bought a bunch of shells from amazon.

I live near the Sugarland area and I'm wondering if ya'll know where I can get some little shellies and of course any and all advice is welcome. I am researching. If possible I'd like more than just a pair but I'd also prefer not to have a bunch of fry. Is that possible?

I also have a 75gal. assorted cichlid tank and a 30gal with an F8 puffer and 2 black mollies.

    Thank You All, Liz

escargot shells work for the majority of shelldwellers and like you mentioned it's cheap on amazon.

In your area I don't think there is many places with shellies but you could post up a wtb thread in the sale section here and look for some from the locals. I know CrazyBMX has Multifasciatus for sale but he's up north.

Welcome aboard! I have found shells nearly everywhere. I think Cost Plus stocks escargot shells. Any of the smaller shellies will work, but nearly all will breed eventually, lol. Ours were only in the tank a month and we had fry already... You could try a Sumbu dwarf alto as a fry eater and its also a shellie. Daves rare fish in San Antonio has a great selection and shipping is fast and cheap.

Iv got baby multies raising up. They are diggers tho! Lol, in 24 hrs they'll rearrange ur whole tank. Shells are a must tho. For a 10 gallon id say go with something one the smaller size
Multie-brevis-melagris-ocellatus-similis or even some red fin caudopunctatus would be cool.
5 gal baby hecqui grow out
                7 gal baby compressicps
                14 bio cube fry tank, multies-orange leleupi-telmatochromis
                4 tank rack- 30 cubes. Shellies, mulities-brevis-telmatochromis-caudopunctaus
                100 gal mixed community tank
                125 Tropheus black bembas

                Tanngankia cichlids what else

                      Welcome to the box, Liz!

Shellies are great fun...good choice. They are always fun to watch, we call it the little soap opera in our tank, All My Fry...As The Current Turns...Photoperiod of Our Lives, etc etc. They keep us entertained!

We also got our multies from Dave's (in person, but I've always heard great things about his shipping), and like mnemenoi said, it didn't take long for them to start breeding. Having a fry eater isn't a bad plan, but I wouldn't worry about being overwhelmed with fry either way- they're not nearly as prolific as guppies, for example, and they're much easier to give away- someone's always looking for shellies!

                        Hey All.

Thank you all for the kind welcomes! It's really nice to be on a Texas group. My favorite fish group has always been the puffer forum. Absolutely LOVE those guys and gals.

I decided to go out fish shopping today. I went to City Pets and started talking to some customers and they told me that The Fish Ranch always has shellies but the guy won't ever sell them. I had never been to the Ranch and I thought what the hey, I'll visit any way. What a SUPER, SUPER NICE MAN! He had about 12 Brevis and sure enough he told me they weren't for sale. LOL I laughed and I told him what I was told at City Pets and after we chatted for a bit he told me to "go home and set up a tank and I'll sell you a few." About $14 each. They were 2-3". So now I'm trying to decide if I want to get a few of those or do I want to make a trip to Spring to see one of you guys.

I read on a shellie forum that the brevis are too shy and boring. And that they're mean and you can only keep a pair. Tran, at The Fish Farm [TFF] told me that his guys always get along. And they were definitely not shy. They looked at me just as hard as I was looking at them. A few times I moved my hand and a few of them dived into shells but they came back out pretty fast.

I really like the idea of all of the aquascaping by the multis. Oh, and I love the gold shellies.

I spent about an hour on youtube today watching shellies argue and take care of their young. One guy had a time lapse of his multis decorating. It was awesome. I just don't know what to do!

                        Liz

Multies are fun to see how their going to arrange ur tank. Which ever u go with , im sure you'll like them.

I'm thinking he will probably only sell 2 to me. If he would sell more would that be ok or should I only go with 2? I think he said he's had these for about 8mths. I've been reading about trying to sex them. I asked the guy and he said the males are a good bit larger than the females.

Speaking of getting attacked. My ACEI were chewing all over my arm this morning. Those little buggers have some sharp teffers!

If you want to breed them I would go with only a pair, since this is not really your aim I would try to add more than a pair and it seems that you would probably be happier with something like multis that seem to do better in a colony
