  • For Sale: Lots and lots of clean, beautiful cholla wood!

I recently ended up with a pleco and was really bummed by the selection of driftwood at the stores. I started doing some research and realized cholla wood would probably be just as good and it's available right at my doorstep! I have been collecting some really gorgeous specimens lately and would love to share. All of the wood I collect is coming off of untouched property -- by that I mean no fertilizers, pesticides, etc., are used anywhere near it. I have pieces ranging from 3" to 24" long. I can also "harvest by request". I discard all of the less stable stuff and only use the really solid pieces. I cut all the really sharp nubbins off and leave clean cuts on both ends (unless you like the "natural" jaggedness). I can jam-pack a small Priority Mail box with 3" - 6" pieces of untreated, unboiled wood for $13, postage-paid. I'm not running a commercial venture -- just trying to offer a hard-to-come-by item to everyone that would benefit from it! I'll try to figure out how to post pictures here and get some up so you can see what we've got going out here. My pleco is addicted to it -- he spends much of his time with his little mouth glued to his pieces!

OMG! You're from Corpus??? I LOVE it there! My family used to try and make regular trips to Corpus Cristi and Port Aransas when we were kids. A lot of my family is still in Friendswood! I'm near Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have the cane cholla here -- it has slightly larger holes than the teddy bear cholla (I think that grows in Arizona or California?).

Lol, I thought you meant Santa Fe, TX, when you introduced yourself in the other thread.

Thank you for the plug! ;-) That's so cool that shrimp and crayfish like it, too! I am learning a lot just reading through the threads. I don't know that I'll ever have the time/money to keep huge tanks, but I'm so delighted with my little pleco guy and bettas that they may just end up with some stylin' homes.

I'm interested about how many fit inside a small priority box?

I'm not sure! LOL! I suppose it depends on the size you'd like. I have skinny (3/4" in diameter) up to fat (2+" in diameter), and of course whatever length you'd like. I'm happy to customize your box if you have specific needs. My guess would be that about 5 6"x3/4" - 1.5" ones would fit, or up to a dozen "nubbins". I don't like the thin, brittle stuff, as I think it breaks down too fast, so the "nubbins" would be 2" - 3" long and anywhere from 1/2" - 2.5" in diameter. I hope this helps!

Hi Thomas! I have had no problems with it sinking. I usually soak it (I boil my own two or three times to remove tannins and any residual soil that's stuck to it, then dry and store it for when I need more) and it sinks right to the bottom.
