  • In Search of a quiet cannister filter for 150G

Hi Guys, I'm ready for a new filter for my 150. I was using a couple of magnum 350's, but they are just too loud. I've heard that the eheims are really quiet. What do you guys think? Are they easy to clean, etc? I would like something with quick release tubes. I just want one cannister this time. I don't want something that is broken down that I have to fix though. If you guys know of anyone that may be selling something on the cheap or would love to give away to your friendly website owner, send me a PM please. I'm sure I could make them a super duper site sponsor or something cool.  8)

I'm running an Eheim 2217, and have found it to be very quiet.

I love my Eheim's, all of them! Mine are the classics (2215's and 2217's) which I don't think would be big enough for your 150 unless you run two.  I've never had the bigger ones so I don't know if they are as quiet or not.

Re: In Search of a quiet cannister filter for 150G

I own a 2213 and once the air is pushed out of the pump after starting it (takes about 30 seconds) I have to touch the pump or watch the spray bar to tell you that its running.. that is how quiet they are.

For a 150G you will have to have 2x Eheim 2217 classic or else you will need to buy one Eheim Pro III 2080 - of course with two filters you can remove one from the system clean it and then let the other one take the bio load for a while until the cleaned one is back up and running.

The other pump that recently has amazed me is the Hagen Fluval FX5... what I really like about it is the built on water removal system (ie you can clean your canister and remove water from the tank without moving the pump.  You would only need on of those..   You will need to talk to tim (Armthehomeless) about this model as he has one running on his Tropheus 215G tank... as far as I know he is EXTREMELY pleased with it.

For that size tank I would run at LEAST two eheim's.....preferably 2x2217 or 2x2026

Another vote for Eheim. I have an Ecco 2234 with the spray bar under the surface and this tank is completely silent. As Zulaab said though, I  like to over filter by running dual filters. By having two filters with 100 gallons capacity each, you have filtration for 200 gallons and excellent water quality. You clean them on a rotating basis so you always have a well seeded filter. And should you have one fail, you still have enough filtration to get you by. Another advantage is water flow in a tank that big. By putting the outputs on opposite sides of the tank from their respective inlets, water flow is improved.

On my 150 gallon I run the Eheim 2262 and a Eheim 2217.

In all of my search for a large canister for a cheap price, the absolute best is to go to Fishland and talk to Andy.

Andy has the Eheim Pro 3 2080 for $325.00 and the Fluval FX5 for $199.00

Either one of those two filters, can handle just about anything your putting in a 150.

What kind of fish are you putting in there?

Oooh Eheim Pro 3... I might have to look into that too...

I run 4 Eheim Pro IIs on different tanks, and love them, would never go with anything else, and they are exceptionally quiet and easy to maintain.

I have a eheim 2250.  Kind of noisy but not as much as the 2260.  Get them pro series one, I heard they are really quiet.  A 2217 is good to but I dont think it does the job for a 150.  It barely did the job for my 90 gallon.

On those bigger tanks I don't think any single filter is good enough.

I vote for Rena XP4, it is incredibly quiet and reasonably priced.

For the price of 1 xp4 I would rather go with 2x xp3's
