              Re: Rare Tropheus

              I have a list.

The top on my list is True Wild Caught sp.black anything.  I am tired of seeing the pondraised guys.  I want to see some untained pure sp.blacks.

              Kiriza, Bemba, or Rutunga.

              Bemba

Then next would ofcoarse be Golden Kalambo, or Golden Kushangaza

Then just about anything Congo side, or Duboisi true wilds not some pondraised/lakeside stuff.

                    Re: Rare Tropheus

Silly question Goeff, no offense now..

How would you know if it is pond raised or wc , besides the size. If you were sent 2 identicle looking fish and had to compare?? Not trying to be picky buy I think it would be hard to tell..

Also if you are talking about WC, what in your opinion is better, pond raised from Africa or F1 from WC heritage?? Of course WC would be #1 scenerio..

                    What are your thoughts

                      Re: Rare Tropheus

The red guys.  I know they have red-flame and orange flame.  They might all be the same fish, but I really would like the red guys better.

Is their a difference in Pemba, and Bemba or is it just a spelling?

What is the difference in Kiriza and Mboko?

I think Kiriza is a mix of yellow and red, almost exactly like Orange Flame but mostly yellow and not orange.  Mboko is pure yellow.

                        Re: Rare Tropheus

                        Phung,

The differences in wildcaught and pondraised are that the wildcaught have larger overall size, and more genetic diveristy.  With the genetic diversity you get a different range of color.

As an example, take the Bemba for example.  You look at pictures today and they are mostly orange, or take Kiriza and they have yellow and orange.  BUT when you look at the Konnings photos of wild fish, the Kiriza is a golden yellow and bemba is red.

In addition to this, the pondraised guys are genetic degenerate because they are inbreed mostly because they donot know if they are breeding with their own verses F1, F2 , Wild caught etc...

Personally I prefer Wildcaught because that is where you get the most diversity and with proper care the fish get to full size 5 to 6"  What I have seen in pondraised/vatraised/lakeside raised is they dont reach their full size potential and their color diminishes. It has been my experience anytime you inbreed your own.  I like knowing that I can re-produce fry with the most diversity as possible, and they are F1.  I learned thru mistakes in my own Rutunga colony what can happen in time if your inbreeding.  BUT that is what happens when you have a rare collection, or one that is very deep into pondraised generations and people have no reason to really go and collect wilds.

F1 colonies are the genetic material of 1-3 males, and about 4-6 females in general.  The number goes down as you getinto F2 and F3 etc...

When you are breeding colonies, from a pure generation then you making the best babies.  Pondraised you just dont know for sure what you got, some inbreed or a generation.

If I had a choice, I would purchase Burundi pondraised over Domestic Pondraiseds because at least the fish got natural water, and access to natural foods from time to time.  Also, if done correctly, the people at Burundi Farms have hopefully maintained the genetic diversity of their breeding stock.  Where as in the US, they just cannot go and get more, they have to import them again, and they raise their own which inbreeds get worse and worse.

                        Man...I think I wrote a book here...sorry....

                        Geoff

                            Re: Rare Tropheus

my preferences...based upon experience...and what I have seen...

                            1.  Wildcaught
                            2.  True F-1 - lots of people will call it F-1 and its not.
                            3.  F-2 if the F-1 breeding colony was from 2-sources or more
                            4.  Burundi Pondraised
                            5.  Domestic Pondraised
                            6.  Tankraised - you never know what you got

                            sorry Derek about the manual.

I actually am thinking of writing a book.

Pretty interesting on your selections of what you would pick. Lots of arguments can be made but we won't get into that. Everyone should get together and write a book or even a small manual
