I've wondered this for quite a while now, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Maybe because I am a woman who is into fishkeeping. I know we are out there...I've met some of you...but the majority of people in the hobby are guys. Anyone have any theories?

Why aren't there more women into fishkeeping?

I think most of the people I know "into" fish tanks like the playing with/tweaking aspect as well as the entire nature inside concept. These women, in my limited experience, are the same women that tend towards the science/engineering/tomboyish abilities/mindsets instead of the artsy/creative side.
I'm one of those people who took stuff apart and put it back together as a kid and am exceedingly fond of the messing around with the fish tank aspect as well as the sitting back and watching the fish and enjoying it. Also went to school for enginnering and was always the only or one of two women in class.
Most women I meet are more creative/artistic and thus appreciative of fish tanks but not necessarily interested in the details of the "how" of making it work. The few with the science/math/mechanical tendencies seem to be able to enjoy the finished product as well as wanting to be involved in getting it there.

That actually makes sense. I know that I enjoy every aspect of the hobby, from just kicking back and watching the fish all the way to tinkering with filtration in an attempt to make it work better. Huh...I think you figured it out!Our Fishhouse

I think the nail was hit on the head when it was suggested that women, for the most part, don't have a lot of interest in the technical stuff...filtration, etc. But that seems true in most walks of life in my experience. Guys seem to be more technically oriented. I'm struck by something Marion said to me after we set up the show room at FOTAS last year. She said that it was like watching an Amish barn raising. But maybe we're all wrong about why there aren't more women in the hobby ...maybe today there are just more women in general who aren't fond of kok...
