  • Compatibility Question

    Fellow Boxer's

I recently heard that you can add Clown Loach's to a tank to control trumpet snails, if so, would it be possible to add three or four to my brichardi tank with all their fry, or would they just get jumped on by the brichardi ?

    Re: Compatibility Question

I didn't think Clowns would mess with Trumphets.  Also, I don't think they would have a chance with the Brichardi.  The only other fish I have with my Daffodils is a regular pleco and they still try to mess with him.

Another experienced member of this website was telling me this past weekend that Clown Loach's where good for keeping trumpet snails in check, maybe I mis-understood them???

        Re: Compatibility Question

Well, I may be incorrect.  I was under the impression that certain fish will eat snails, but none would eat Trunphets.  The trumphets may not make themselves appearant if there is a predator lurking around.  Someone told me fish don't like them because they don't taste good or something like that.

Hopefully others will post their opinion.

          Re: Compatibility Question

Well, I did some browsing on the web, and one site reported that the Trumpet snail has a very hard shell and most fish find it difficult to penetrate it, so maybe they eat the young which are born live? In the mean time, I've been over a few other articles without much positive data whether loach's eat snails or not. I now know they LOVE worms..... :)  DUH

Sence I have not seen 1st hard if the clowns eat the trumpet snails. I can not say for sure if they do.
But when I put my clonws in my tank that did have them, for some reason I no longer have any snails in my tank. Take this for whats its worth.

but that still doesnt solve the problem of the brichardi beating up on them. if it was a small group i would say fine, but if it is a large breeding group then you probably have a problem.

True, the brichardi are most likely going to give any potential tankmate an unfriendly greeting.

                      Re: Compatibility Question

I tried the clown loach approach for controlling MTS's and it's my belief they only drove them down into the substrate.  Someone, maybe ek, said the MTS's are not only very hard shelled but have some sort of flap for protection from predators making them very challenging to invite for dinner.  When I rehomed the loach's my MTS population resurfaced, apparently none the worse for the experience.  I've found the old bait at night and remove in the morning approach seems to work the best for keeping the MTS's under control.

Nancy how big were the clowns?

Cause mine are the larger type clowns. I have not seen any snails in my tank for over a year now.

They were about three inches or so, maybe they were just overwhelmed   .

Those darn MTS's are about as hard to get rid of as some algaes

:(  I like MTS. They stir up the gravel and only come out at night.  :)

I've also heard that they have really hard shells that are difficult to break (and I've tried on a few empty shells, they're much harder than ramshorn or pond snails) and their "trap door" (for the life of me I can't remember what it's called) probably helps, as well.

                              Re: Compatibility Question

MTS have the hard shell and a trap door to protect themselves.

MTS are really good for the tank since they burrow a lot and if you have fine substrate like sand they are more beneficial then they are unsightly! If you have fine sand and don't stir it up frequently you will build anerobic gas pockets which are lethal if left to build up....once stirred up after that expect for things to fall out and die!

Your cedar point gang should not bother the clowns much but try and get healthy ones that are at least the same size as the gang....also you need to get clowns in groups cause they do much better in groups. The clowns will help some but don't completely.

I am for leaving the snails....they are beneficial and if you don't overfeed they won't take over. but seriously they are really beneficial! they will eat leftover foods and stir your substrate......if you really want to get rid of them you could try to bait them with a coke bottle and food inside the bottle and just dispose of them manually or just salt the tank.
