  • Davemonkey's El Natural

Okay, I was asked by a couple people for pics of my tank after posting my filter for sale.

This was once a high tech, pressurized CO2, EI fertilized plant machine. I recently (mid-October) ripped it all out, put down soil substrate capped with Soil Master Select, and planted back up as a Natural Planted Tank (El Natural). The goal is to keep it heavily planted and heavily stocked with fish. The plants take care of filtering the water, the fish provide the "nutrients" for the plants. CO2 is provided on a slow-release basis by the decomp of the organic matter in the soil substrate.

The downside: Plants grow slower, can NEVER rescape without flooding the water with nutrient load (leading to algae).

The upside: No ferts to mess with, no water changes (except occasionally), easy to keep up with trimming.

Okay, as promised (keep in mind this is a new set-up, so LOTS of filling in needed as the plants grow) :

Here's my daughter's El Natural, several months established:

Thanks. My daughter is only 4 and does much of the trimming (but she PROBABLY had help from daddy setting it up ).

Dave, thanks for posting. I really admire the El Natural way. Kevin mentioned the process of using soil and now it makes sense that he was referring to you. How long do you think the CO2 release from the soil will be able to sustain the tank? What is the foreground plant in the hex?

Also I never liked Hex tanks until I saw yours. Brilliant!

You're welcome. There are some people I know from APC that have had El Natural set-ups for 7+ years and still going strong. If I can get 1 year out of it I'll be happy (that's about how long I can go before I want to try something new ).

The foreground in the hex is Marsilea sp. (not sure which species, but it is not M. quadrifolia or M. minuta, maybe M. crenata or other? ). You have to nearly overfeed the fish to keep it healthy because it takes up ALOT of phosphorus (fish food has lots of phosphates).

I'm actually about to buy 20 more rasboras and some dwarf cichlids for my larger tank because right now I don't have enough fish to provide enough waste for the Marsilea foreground.

Overstock and overfeed. Planted tanks continue to break all the rules. I think this is a pinnacle of planted tanks. I'm going to study your APC thread because I want to try this.

                Very, very awesome.
Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.

                  Simply beautiful!

What size are the tanks, both your daughter's and yours? I was trying to deduce the size by the plants present, but since it's not M. minuta, I'm not sure how the size of that Marsilea compares. :) I want to say 20L...

                  Again, beautiful tanks!

                      Thanks everyone.

                      The tanks are a 50gal long (48" long x 12" deep x 18" tall) and a 12 gal hex.
