I'm not familar with southdown sand, all I know about this sand is that they "the ones who use it" call it sugar sand. It's sold primarily as a staple for sand blasting. It comes from the columbus area. That's all I know at this point. This same source is the guy who shared some black sand blasting sand with me a few months ago, but that is another ball game all together, the black is filty and not as fine. It does cloud the water somewhat and is a lot of trouble to clean, but once you have cleaned it, it is great.
This "sugar sand" reminds me of what I have seen in ash trays that stand outside of theatres and office buildings. I am testing it now at home here, and so far, I'm very happy with how clean it is and how easily it settles after being disturbed. Long term results of using this sand have yet to be known.

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.
