Unless I've had them a long time, they get flushed or frozen and then put in the trash, depending on size. I have had a few black ghosts that I did bury in the flower bed, but did not put them in plastic bags. Plastic bags take an enternity to break down, if they ever do.

Freezer. Most of our fish are too big to flush, plus I can't flush a fish that has been around for years. My plan is to eventually have a mass burial. Our Fishhouse

I only started freezing my fish because I was too busy to do an immediate burial in the yard. If you freeze them then you can wait till you have the spare time. I actually have a couple that have been in the freezer for a few months. I should probably bury them some weekend.
I put them in plastic bags in the freezer to keep them from touching any food (because that would be gross to find one laying on top of my ice cream ) and then label them so they aren't mistaken for something else. Even the bagged fish get thrown in the back of the freezer so they won't be seen every time I open the door (Maybe that's why they've been in there so long? ). On the "funeral" day I simply throw away the bag and just bury the ice and frozen fish inside.-Laura-

If it makes anybody feel better, we have a separate deep freezer that my flowehorn is in. We also use that freezer to hold all of our snake food (frozen rodents) and other dead critters that I have not gotten around to burrying yet. I would just feel bad about putting my flowerhorn in the garbage since I had him for so long and raised him up from a tiny baby.

If it's a small fish that we didn't have for a long time we flush them. If the fish is too big to flush we bag them and put them out with the trash. I have one fish in my freezer. He was very special to me and my kids - they would never go for throwing him away.
Cute story - one day I was going to flush a little fish we had that passed away and my son was in the bathroom with me. As we flushed it down he looked up at me with tears in his eyes and asked "When I die are you going to flush me down the toilet too?" (he was 5 yrs old at the time)

My daughter used to say, are we going to flush them to heaven?
If I can I always bag and throw away, because it goes into the public water system. Sure the waste treatment cleans the water for drinking and cleaning, but..man its just better I think to try to do your part.
We can always dig a hole, but we might not be able to drink from it.380G For Sale $3000 Acrylic tank & stand
