The powder blue gourami I moved from my daughters tank to mine had become king of the tank. He even chases the ram away from the shrimp pellets I drop for the corys.

Petco and most fish stores(chain stores) will test your water true, but they use test strips and most will only tell you your water is either OK or bad (bad meaning it will kill anything and is off their charts). Its just the nature of using employees that are only minimally aware of what they are testing for. Its better if you did your own tests or looked at what they are testing for and read your own results. I have seen far too many folk rely upon this method and get very bad advice/explanations for their test results

I agree, a good quality kit is a great investment. Just wanted to share what I have seen as an issue with those stores testing water

I would always suggest to find someone nearby cause most members don't mind helping another out. I don't suggest test strips more less the big chains for anything .

What I do on my own is totally different, if I were to have problems or something was not in place then I would consider it but based off what I know and my experience I remedy it from there. I do go through precautions when I set up my tanks in comparison to many others which allows me to do well with the husbandry.

Just once in a while keep your mouth from running and soak in some good info. mnemenoi seems like a pretty patient guy and is really offering up some good information and taking the time to post it all thoroughly.... sit back and learn a few things R_noobsauce.

                          • This might be a little bit too late, but I've started all of my (3) tanks fully stocked with tetra's safestart experiencing very little (really zero) death. Before you do, read this thread, else you will likely fail -- http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/aq...safestart.html

Keep in mind, my results may have been due to having heavily planted my tanks at the start! But many people on the net will back up the claim that safestart is a effective and reputable product (unlike many of the other ("bacteria in a bottle")

Also, I'm not sure you can keep/sustain/grow cherry shrimp in a community without there being many hiding places for them.

                            • I have been using Stability by Seachem for both my tanks but the 3.5 keeps having issues and the 14 had had 0 deaths even being over stocked as I have moved survivors from the 3.5 over to it. There is something causing the ph to drop extremely fast and i'm not sure why but I am replacing it with a 10 this weekend and that should make life alot easier. As far as hiding places for the shrimp when i last added shrimp to the tank I had an anubis plant, water sprite, princess carriage decoration, and 4-5 pieces of cholla wood. With the 10 though I am going to add several more plants to the tank and plan to have just danios, endlers, and some shrimp.
